🔥 When is the best time to visit the Danakil Depression?
The cool season runs from November to February, when daytime temperatures hover around 30–34 °C. Avoid June–September: summer highs reach 50 °C, and Ethiopia’s rainy season can flood the Awash River and block access to Erta Ale and Lake Afrera.
🛡️ Is the Danakil Depression safe to visit?
Yes — when traveling with a licensed operator. Armed escorts are mandatory under Afar regional law, and we include them on every tour. We monitor the regional security situation daily and adjust departure points (Mekele or Semera) accordingly.
🚙 Where do tours depart from?
Most of our tours depart from Mekele (Tigray Region). Following the 2020–2022 Tigray Crisis, we also offer departures from Semera, the capital of Afar Region. Both are accessible by domestic flight from Addis Ababa.

🛂 Do I need permits?
Yes — all visitors require Afar Regional Government tourism permits, security clearance, and entrance fees for Dallol and Erta Ale. All of these are included in our package price.
📸 Can I bring a drone when travelling to Danakil Depression?
Yes, but a special permit is required (cost: ~$150 USD). We can arrange this on your behalf with 2 weeks’ notice.
🏨 Where do we sleep when travelling to Danakil Depression?
Day 1: Traditional woven beds (open-air) in Hamed Ela or Berhale.
Day 2: Stone platforms at the Erta Ale crater rim under the stars.
Luxury packages include private mess tents and upgraded mattresses.
🍽️ What about food and water?
All meals are prepared by our camp cook. Expect Ethiopian dishes (injera, shiro, pasta) and fresh fruit. Bottled water is unlimited. Vegetarian/vegan diets accommodated with advance notice.
✈️ How do I get to Mekele or Semera?
Daily Ethiopian Airlines domestic flights from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (1 hour, $80–$150 one-way). We arrange transfers from the airport to your hotel and tour start point.
