Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Mekele / Semera → Salt Mines → Hamed Ela

4×4 convoy into the Depression. Stop at the camel salt caravan loading area — a 2,000-year-old trade route still active today. Arrive Hamed Ela base camp. Float in the natural brine pool at sunset.

Day 2: Dallol Hydrothermal Fields & Lake Asale

Pre-dawn drive to Dallol for sunrise — the colours are most intense in early light. Two hours in the acid fields. Afternoon: Lake Asale salt walk and brine swim. The lake is so dense you cannot sink.

Day 3: Erta Ale Lava Lake → Overnight at Crater Rim

Afternoon convoy to Erta Ale base. Dusk summit trek across hardened lava by torchlight. The crater opens to the permanent lava lake glowing below. Sleep at the rim. Dawn descent. Return to Mekele.
