Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Addis Ababa — Arrival & Welcome

Airport pickup and transfer to your hotel in Addis Ababa. After settling in, join your guide for a welcome dinner of traditional Ethiopian cuisine — injera, tibs, and misir wot. Your guide will walk through the full itinerary, gear requirements, and what to expect in the Simien Mountains and the Danakil Depression. Early rest recommended.

Day 2: Gondar — The Fortress City

Morning flight north to Gondar, one of Ethiopia’s most storied cities. Afternoon visit to the Royal Enclosure of Fasil Ghebbi — a remarkable complex of six castles and palaces built by successive Ethiopian emperors between the 17th and 18th centuries, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk through the Debre Berhan Selassie church, whose famous ceiling is painted with 104 cherub faces. Evening stroll through Gondar’s central market.

Day 3: Simien Mountains — Sankaber Camp (3,250m)

Drive from Gondar to Buyit Ras, the Simien Mountains National Park gate at 3,200m. Begin trekking through dense juniper forest and open heathland. The escarpment edge reveals a dramatic drop of hundreds of metres into the valley below. First encounters with gelada baboons — the only primates on Earth that feed almost exclusively on grass, found in troops of dozens grazing the cliff edges. Reach Sankaber camp by late afternoon. Sunset views across the Simien escarpment.

DAY 4 Simien Mountains — Jinbar Waterfall & Geech Camp (3,600m)

Full trekking day heading south along the escarpment. Pass the spectacular Jinbar waterfall — a 500-metre cascade that plunges from the plateau edge into the valley far below, surrounded by giant lobelia trees. Continue to Geech camp at 3,600m. Possible sightings of the endangered Ethiopian wolf hunting giant mole-rats at dusk, and Walia ibex on the rocky outcrops. Camels carry
all camping equipment.

Day 5: Ras Dashen — Africa’s 4th Highest Peak (4,550m)

Early start before dawn. The terrain becomes increasingly rocky and bare as you gain altitude.
Ras Dashen (4,550m) is the highest point in Ethiopia and the fourth highest peak in Africa. On a clear day, the summit reveals views that extend across the highlands and, on exceptional days, toward Sudan. The sense of standing at the top of Ethiopia is immense. Descend to Chenek camp for a well-earned rest.

Day 6: Mekele — Gateway to the Danaki

Exit the national park and drive to Gondar or to Mekele (by road or connecting flight depending on package). Mekele is the capital of the Tigray region and the main staging point for all Danakil expeditions. Check in to your guesthouse, take a hot shower — the last proper one for several days — and attend the detailed Danakil briefing. Your guide will explain safety protocols, the armed Afar scout, what to expect from the extreme environment, and what gear to carry.

Day 7: Hamed Ela — Entering the Danakil Depression

Early morning 4×4 convoy departs Mekele heading northeast. As you descend from the Tigray highlands into the Afar region, the temperature rises steadily and the landscape transforms from green terraced farmland to stark desert. Stop at the renowned Afar salt mining flats — workers chip rectangular blocks of salt from the crystallised crust using simple hand tools, then load them onto kneeling camels. This caravan route from the Depression to the highland markets has been operating continuously for over a thousand years. Arrive at Hamed Ela base camp in the afternoon. Walk to the edge of the white salt flat at sunset. Take a float in the natural brine pool — the density makes it impossible to sink. Camp dinner and stargazing.

Day 8: Dallol — The Alien Landscape

Pre-dawn drive to Dallol for sunrise — the single best time to visit, when the neon yellows, greens, and oranges of the hydrothermal field are most vivid and the heat is still manageable. Walk carefully between bubbling acid pools (temperatures exceed 112°C), sulfur chimneys, and salt formations that grow overnight into bizarre crystalline towers. Dallol sits at minus 48 metres below sea level and holds the record for the highest average annual temperature of any inhabited location on Earth. The colours and formations look literally like another planet — Mars, perhaps, filtered through a fever dream. By 9–10am the heat becomes serious; return to camp.
Afternoon: drive to Lake Asale and walk out across the vast, blindingly white salt crust. Float in the mineral rich brine — your body is completely buoyant. Watch the salt crystallise at the waterline.

Day 9: Erta Ale — Overnight at the Lava Lake

Rest morning at Hamed Ela — hydrate and prepare for the night trek. Afternoon convoy departs across the desert toward Erta Ale, driving across fields of ancient hardened lava that crack and boom underfoot. The volcano rises gradually from the flat desert floor, its summit marked by a faint heat shimmer and, on active nights, a faint orange glow. At the base camp, pack your overnight kit onto camels. Begin the summit trek as the sun sets — two hours of steady walking across cooled lava flow guided by headtorches. The crater rim appears and below it, the lava lake churns and pulses, sending waves of heat upward into the night air. Erta Ale’s lava lake is one of only five permanent lava lakes on Earth. Watch it move, crack, and occasionally fountain. Sleep on the crater rim under an immense star field, the lava glowing below you through the night.

Day 10: Return to Addis Ababa — Farewell

Early morning at the crater as the lava lake takes on a different quality of colour in the dawn light — deeper, more amber. Begin the descent as the desert wakes up. Long convoy back to Mekele, arriving by early afternoon. Hot shower, rest. Evening flight to Addis Ababa (or overnight in Mekele if preferred). Farewell dinner with traditional Ethiopian food — kitfo, gored gored, tej honey wine. Toast to ten remarkable days. Airport transfer for late-night or next-day flights.
