Day 1: Addis Ababa — Arrival

Airport pickup, hotel check-in, welcome dinner. Evening visit to the National Museum of Ethiopia to see Lucy — the 3.2-million-year-old fossilised human ancestor discovered in the Afar region, the very landscape you will travel through in days ahead. Full trip briefing with your guide.

Day 2: Lalibela — The Rock-Hewn Churches

Morning flight to Lalibela, one of the holiest sites in Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity. Afternoon visit to the northern cluster — six churches carved downward into solid red volcanic rock in the 12th century by King Lalibela, who believed he was creating a New Jerusalem. These are not ruins: priests still chant inside them, pilgrims sleep in the courtyards, and the smell of incense fills every chamber. The engineering, executed without modern tools, remains one of the great architectural mysteries of the medieval world.

Day 3: Lalibela — Bet Giyorgis & Monasteries

Full day exploring the remaining churches. The southern cluster includes Bet Giyorgis — the most perfectly carved of all, shaped like a Greek cross and standing in its own deep pit courtyard, its exterior decorated with three superimposed cross reliefs. Optional morning hike to Asheton Maryam monastery, perched above the town on the cliff face, for sweeping views of the Lasta highlands at dawn. Afternoon free to revisit favourite churches and photograph in the golden hour light.

Day 4: Gondar — The Castle City

Flight from Lalibela to Gondar. Afternoon visit to the Royal Enclosure (Fasil Ghebbi), a collection of six stone castles built by Ethiopian emperors between 1632 and 1855 — a strange and magnificent fusion of Aksumite, Baroque, and Moorish architectural influences. Also visit the Debre Berhan Selassie church, whose ceiling is lined with 104 painted cherub faces, widely considered the finest example of Ethiopian ecclesiastical art.

Day 5: Simien Mountains — Sankaber Camp (3,250m)

Drive from Gondar into the Simien Mountains National Park. Trek through juniper and hagenia forest to Sankaber camp at 3,250m. First encounters with gelada baboons — massive, colourful chested primates found only in the Ethiopian highlands, grazing the cliff edges in troops of hundreds. The escarpment drops hundreds of metres into the valley. Sunset from the rim is extraordinary.

Day 6: Simien Mountains — Jinbar Waterfall & Geech Camp

Trek south along the escarpment past the Jinbar waterfall — one of Ethiopia’s most dramatic cascades, dropping 500m from the plateau edge. Continue to Geech camp at 3,600m through high moorland studded with giant lobelia — a plant that grows a metre per century and reaches 10 metres in the Simien. At dusk, Ethiopian wolves hunt mole-rats across the moorland, visible at close range.

Day 7: Simien — Chenek Camp & Walia Ibex

Trek to Chenek camp beneath dramatic basalt pinnacles and cliff faces. Chenek is the best location in the world to observe the Walia ibex — a large wild mountain goat found only in the Simien Mountains and listed as endangered. Watch them navigate near-vertical rock faces with casual ease. Explore the escarpment edge at sunset; the views extend across multiple ranges of the Ethiopian highlands.

Day 8: Ras Dashen — Summit Day (4,550m)

Pre-dawn start for the Ras Dashen summit approach. The terrain above 4,000m is stark, rocky, and beautiful — a high-altitude moonscape with views that open in every direction as you gain height. Ras Dashen (4,550m) is Ethiopia’s highest point and the fourth highest peak on the African
continent. On clear days, summit views extend across the highlands toward Sudan. Descend to Debark for the night.

Day 9: Mekele — Gateway to the Danakil

Drive or fly to Mekele. Transition day: rest, hot shower, repack for the desert. Full Danakil briefing with your guide and the introduction of your armed Afar scout, who will accompany the group throughout the Depression. Equipment check and water preparation.

Day 10: Hamed Ela — Entering the Danakil Depression

4×4 convoy northeast from Mekele. The landscape drops steadily as you descend below sea level — temperature climbs, humidity drops, and the world becomes increasingly stark and mineral.
Stop at the salt mining flats where Afar workers cut and load salt blocks onto camel caravans bound for the highland markets — a scene unchanged for a millennium. Arrive at Hamed Ela. Brine pool swim at sunset.

Day 11: Dallol — Hydrothermal Fields & Ragad Mines

Sunrise at Dallol — the neon acid pools, sulfur chimneys, and salt towers of the hydrothermal field in early morning light. Walk between formations that bubble at 112°C in electric yellow, vivid green, and rust red. Visit the Black Mountain sulfur dome and the Ragad salt mines, where workers cut the crust before the midday heat makes work impossible. Afternoon: Lake Asale salt flat walk and brine swim.

Day 12: Lake Asale & Lake Afdera

Morning walk on the vast white salt crust of Lake Asale — flat, crystalline, and disorienting in its emptiness. Afternoon drive south to Lake Afdera, a warm saline lake lined with palm trees where flamingos feed at the edges and the mineral-rich water keeps you afloat effortlessly. This is one of the most unexpected and beautiful moments in the Danakil circuit. Sunset from the lakeshore.

Day 13: Erta Ale — Lava Lake Overnight

Afternoon convoy to Erta Ale base. Trek begins at dusk — two hours of walking across hardened lava fields by torchlight to the crater rim. The lava lake churns and glows below, one of only five permanent lava lakes on the planet. Sleep at the rim. The lake does not stop — it moves and cracks and pulses all night, radiating heat upward into the star-filled sky.

Day 14: Return to Addis Ababa — Farewell

Dawn at the crater rim. Slow descent as the desert catches the first light. Drive back to Mekele. 
Flight to Addis Ababa. Farewell dinner with traditional Ethiopian cuisine — kitfo, injera, tej honey wine, and a traditional coffee ceremony. A toast to fourteen remarkable days across the full breadth of northern Ethiopia: from medieval rock churches to the roof of Africa to a permanent lava lake in the world’s hottest desert.
