Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival in Addis Ababa & Addis Ababa City Tour

Welcome to Ethiopia.

Upon arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time, begin a guided introduction to Ethiopia’s capital city.

Your sightseeing program can include Holy Trinity Cathedral, one of Ethiopia’s most important Orthodox churches and the burial place of Emperor Haile Selassie. Continue toward the historic highlands of Entoto, where panoramic viewpoints provide an excellent introduction to Addis Ababa and the surrounding mountains.

Later, explore Mercato, one of Africa’s largest open-air commercial districts, accompanied by your guide.

The day also provides time for a briefing about your upcoming journey into the Danakil Depression, including climate, road conditions, camping arrangements, safety procedures, and what to bring.

Day 2 – Fly Addis Ababa to Mekele → Berhale → Danakil Depression

After breakfast, transfer to Bole International Airport for your morning flight to Mekele, the main gateway for expeditions into the Danakil Depression.

On arrival, meet your Danakil expedition team and transfer to your 4×4 Land Cruiser.

After a final equipment and supply check, leave Mekele and begin descending from the Ethiopian Highlands toward the Afar region. The dramatic change in elevation produces an equally dramatic transformation in scenery as cultivated highlands gradually give way to dry valleys, desert plains, and volcanic terrain.

Continue through Berhale, an important settlement along the traditional salt trading route. Depending on road conditions and the day’s schedule, there may be opportunities to see camel caravans transporting blocks of salt from the Danakil toward the highlands.

Your guide will introduce you to the geology, culture, and history of the region as you travel deeper into the depression.

Day 3 – Dallol → Gaet’ale Pond → Salt Mountains → Hamed Ela

Today is dedicated to one of the most visually extraordinary areas in Ethiopia: Dallol.

After an early breakfast, travel across the salt-covered landscape toward the Dallol hydrothermal field. Walk through an otherworldly environment shaped by volcanic activity, geothermal gases, salt deposits, and highly mineralized water.

Dallol is famous for its remarkable combinations of yellow, green, orange, white, and brown mineral formations, creating landscapes unlike almost anywhere else on Earth.

Continue to Gaet’ale Pond, a small but striking hypersaline geothermal pool surrounded by salt deposits.

Your exploration may also include the unusual salt mountains and salt canyons, where wind, water, and geological processes have sculpted the salt into dramatic formations.

Later, travel toward Hamed Ela, one of the main settlements used as a base for exploring northern Danakil.

If conditions and timing permit, enjoy sunset across the salt plains.

Day 4 – Lake Asale & Camel Caravans → Lake Afrera

Start early to experience the vast salt flats around Lake Asale, one of the characteristic landscapes of the Danakil Depression.

Depending on seasonal and local activity, you may encounter Afar salt workers and traditional camel caravans transporting blocks of salt across the desert. These caravans have historically connected the salt-mining areas of the Danakil with communities in the Ethiopian Highlands.

Spend time photographing the salt flats and learning about traditional salt extraction before beginning the journey south toward Lake Afrera.

Lake Afrera is a saline lake surrounded by stark volcanic mountains and black lava fields. After arriving, enjoy the unusual experience of floating in its highly saline waters.

You can then rinse off and relax in nearby natural freshwater hot springs, one of the most refreshing experiences during a journey through the hot Danakil region.

Dinner will be prepared by the expedition team.

Day 5 – Lake Afrera → Erta Ale Base Camp → Volcano Hike

After breakfast, continue through the volcanic landscapes of the southern Danakil toward Erta Ale, one of Ethiopia’s most famous active volcanoes.

The drive crosses an increasingly rugged environment characterized by lava fields, desert plains, volcanic cones, and isolated Afar settlements.

Reach the base area of Erta Ale later in the day. Your expedition team will prepare for the climb while you have time to rest, eat, hydrate, and organize the equipment needed for the hike.

The ascent normally begins later in the afternoon or toward evening when temperatures become more manageable.

Hike toward the summit area accompanied by your guide and local Afar support team. Depending on current volcanic conditions and officially permitted access, approach the designated observation area overlooking the crater.

After sunset, the darkness can make the volcanic glow significantly more visible, creating one of the most memorable experiences of the entire Danakil journey.

Your guide will determine the safest viewing location according to conditions at the volcano.

Day 6 – Erta Ale Sunrise → Descend → Mekele → Fly to Addis Ababa

Wake before sunrise for another opportunity to observe the dramatic volcanic landscape surrounding Erta Ale.

Morning light provides a very different perspective from the nighttime experience and is particularly rewarding for photography.

After sunrise, begin descending to the vehicles before daytime temperatures rise.

Enjoy breakfast before beginning the return journey toward Mekele. The drive provides a final opportunity to experience the remote desert and volcanic landscapes of the Afar region.

On arrival in Mekele, transfer to the airport for your evening flight back to Addis Ababa.

Upon arrival at Bole International Airport, you can either connect with your international departure or transfer to your hotel depending on your onward arrangements.
