Northern Ethiopia is not simply a collection of monuments. It is a journey through different chapters of Ethiopian history. You begin beside Lake Tana, where monasteries and ancient Christian traditions survive on islands and peninsulas scattered across the country’s largest lake. From there, the road leads to Gondar, the royal city of the Ethiopian emperors, where castles, churches and ceremonial baths tell the story of a powerful imperial period.
Then the landscape changes dramatically. The road climbs toward the Simien Mountains, where enormous escarpments, deep valleys and endemic wildlife reveal a completely different Ethiopia. The mountains are home to species such as the gelada and Walia ibex and form one of Ethiopia’s great natural landscapes.
From the mountains, the journey continues toward Axum, the ancient center of the Aksumite civilization. Its monumental stelae, royal tombs and sacred traditions connect Ethiopia with one of the great civilizations of the ancient world.
Finally comes Lalibela. Here, entire churches were carved down into living rock. The famous complex contains eleven medieval monolithic churches and represents one of the world’s extraordinary architectural and religious achievements.
