Ethiopia’s tectonic underworld — and how to safely explore it

The Danakil Depression in northeastern Ethiopia is a 200 × 50 km rift valley sitting 125 m below sea level — the third-lowest point in Africa, the hottest inhabited place on Earth, and an IUGS-listed geological heritage site. 1. What Is the Danakil Depression?

The Danakil Depression is the northernmost extension of the East African Rift System — the place where the African and Arabian tectonic plates are actively pulling apart at 8–18 mm per year. The rift began opening ~11 million years ago with the counterclockwise rotation of the Danakil microplate. Since then, the crust has thinned dramatically; in the southern depression, no continental crust remains beneath the Erta Ale range — meaning the Nubian and Danakil plates are essentially already detached, and what lies beneath is a transitional crust on the verge of becoming true oceanic floor.

2. Geology in 60 Seconds (For the Curious)

– South = volcanism dominates. The Erta Ale shield-volcano chain (Gada Ale, Alu, Dalafilla, Bora Ale, Erta Ale, Ale Bagu) erupts basaltic lava. Extension is accommodated mainly by dike intrusions, not faulting.
– North = sediments dominate. Tectonic faulting drives the extension. Two volcanoes punctuate the landscape: Maraho and Dallol.
– Salt = the Red Sea has flooded the basin at least four times during the Mid- and Late Pleistocene. The last flood, ~130,000 years ago, left behind fossil coral reefs and >500 m thick evaporite deposits (mainly halite). The lower evaporites came directly from evaporating seawater; the upper ones from continental salt lakes still forming today.

🌋 Erta Ale
A 613 m basaltic shield volcano with one of the world’s only permanent active lava lakes. The lake has been continuously active since at least 1906 and was scientifically rediscovered in the 1960s.

🎨 Dallol: A salt volcano in the heart of the salt plain where rising magmatic fluids dissolve evaporites, ascend to the surface, and create an alien palette of neon yellow potash, lime green sulfur, rust-red iron oxides, and snow-white halite. Astrobiologists study it as an analog for early Mars and Europa.

🧂 Lake Karum (Asale): A vast, fossil salt-plain lake where Afar miners still hand-cut salt blocks and load them onto camel caravans bound for the Ethiopian highlands — one of the longest continuously operating trade routes on Earth.

💧 Gaet’ale Pond (“Yellow Lake”): A small hypersaline pool created in January 2005 when an earthquake reactivated a hot spring near Ahmed’ela village. At 43% salinity, it is the saltiest water body on the planet — saltier than the Dead Sea.

🌊 Lake Afrera (Afdera): A massive hypersaline lake 102 m below sea level. Float effortlessly in mineral-rich water and rinse off in adjacent freshwater hot springs.

6. Safety
