Day 1: Addis Ababa — Arrival & Briefing

Airport pickup, hotel check-in, welcome dinner. Full trip briefing from your guide — the seven days ahead are packed and the pace is brisk. Get to bed early: tomorrow starts before sunrise.

Day 2: Gondar & Simien Mountains — Gelada Afternoon

Morning flight to Gondar. Quick visit to the Royal Enclosure of Fasil Ghebbi — the UNESCO castle complex, striking and unusual, worth the two hours. Drive directly up into the Simien Mountains
National Park for a 4-hour afternoon trek. The gelada baboons are here in large numbers by mid
afternoon, grazing the cliff edges in troops, their colourful chests vivid against the green moorland.
Escarpment views extend for miles. Overnight in Debark.

Day 3: Simien Viewpoints & Drive to Mekele

Early morning golden-hour return into the park for the finest light on the escarpment and a second
gelada encounter — this time quieter, the troops smaller and closer. Drive back to Gondar; fly or
drive to Mekele. Evening: Danakil briefing, gear check, and water preparation. The desert begins
tomorrow.

Day 4: Entering the Danakil — Hamed Ela

4×4 convoy northeast into the Afar desert. Stop at the camel salt caravan loading area — camels
kneeling, blocks stacked, herders calling in Afar dialect, the whole scene ancient and entirely real.
Descend below sea level. Temperature climbs. Arrive at Hamed Ela base camp. Evening walk on
the salt flat, brine pool float, camp dinner.

Day 5: Dallol & Lake Asale

Pre-dawn drive for sunrise at Dallol — the acid springs, sulfur chimneys, and crystalline salt
towers in the first light of day. Two hours in the hydrothermal field following your guide along the
safe paths between pools that bubble at over 100°C. Back at camp by 10am before peak heat.
Afternoon: Lake Asale. Walk the blinding white salt crust. Float in the brine. The contrast between
the mountain heathland of three days ago and this mineral otherworld is total.

Day 6: Erta Ale — Lava Lake Overnight

Afternoon convoy to Erta Ale base. Pack overnight kit. Begin the summit trek at dusk as the light
fades and the volcano’s distant glow becomes visible. Two hours across the lava field. The crater
rim opens to reveal the lava lake below — churning, glowing, radiating heat. One of the rarest
sights on the planet, in one of the world’s most inaccessible places. Sleep at the rim. In seven
days, this night is the reason.

Day 7: Descent → Mekele → Addis Ababa

Sunrise at the crater, the lava taking on amber tones in morning light. Slow descent. Long convoy
back to Mekele. Hot shower, rest. Flight to Addis Ababa. Farewell dinner if time allows. You leave
Ethiopia in seven days having walked in the Simien highland with gelada baboons, stood at
3,600m on Africa’s escarpment, and watched a lava lake glow through the night in the world’s
hottest desert.
